Diseases During World War I
Diseases impacted World War I by causing far more casualties than normal battle wounds. The illnesses during this time were unbearable taking many lives. The people that died from these diseases were not only soldiers but your everyday citizens.
The trenches the soldiers were in during the war were crawling with rats that carried lice. The rats bites also could give the soldiers trench fever.(Hatt) This would be terrible, the rats are stealing food and causing disease. The lice the men could get from them would probably take a long time to get rid of. The disease of Trench Fever was spread by body lice that carried a bacteria called Rochalimaea.( Encyclopedia Britannica) This disease seems very difficult to stop because the lice are so small. Another way disease spread was the cause of dirty washing water and filthy toilets. Some soldiers developed trench foot from standing in the mud and dirty water caused by the rain.(Hatt) This information is really important to understand what the soldiers went through to protect us. The diseases they could catch so easily could really effect them and how they would be able to preform during battle-if they could go into battle at all. A very fatal disease (the Spanish Influenza) spread quickly across the world due to troop movements. In 1918 the deadly disease had reached American soil. (Lynch) It is somewhat ironic that the troops that were protecting the Americans were also spreading the disease to them.
Some of the first signs that hinted to the influenza was a cough, then the victim would begin to notice increasing aches behind the eyes and ears. Soon, their temperature, breathing, and heart rate would rapidly increase.(Lynch) The only good part about these signs is that it would warn people ahead of time that they have the disease and they would be able to take action quickly. The influenza was,in some countries, as common as the cold.(Billings)Having a disease this deadly being as common as the cold is a very scary thing. The main form of preventing the spread Trench Fever was by controlling body lice.(Encyclopedia Britannica) This would be a very difficult way to prevent this disease especially for soldiers who lacked the necessary time and medical supplies. Trench Fever could be detected by a number of symptoms...fever, sore muscles, headaches, and skin outbreaks. Some people would experience these symptoms many times in a few days. The recovery period for this disease was about 2 months.(Encyclopedia Britannica)Recovery from this disease for two months would take a great toll on a persons physical and mental strength.
In almost 4 months a little more than half the world had caught the influenza. About 22 million died from it in the end.(Lynch)It is terrifying that in about 28 weeks half of the world could catch this disease. The influenza pandemic was a very deadly disease that killed around 30 million people. It was worse than the Bubonic Plague and was recorded as the worst epidemic in history.(Billings)Killing so many people so quickly would cause people to be living in terror everyday. The medicine they could provide during this time would make curing this disease seem hopeless. The average life span of the American person was decreased by 10 years due to the influenza pandemic.(Billings) A decade drop in the average life span is outrageous.
During World War I not only battle wounds, but many diseases killed people. If it were not for these illnesses permeating throughout the world many lives would have been spared.
